How I Shut Down Two Porn Shops

For several years there were two porn shops near my house. Both were situated on roads that my family and I use on a weekly basis. For about six years, every time I drive by them I've been praying for God to shut down those porn shops, and within the last few months, He did.

Here are the two buildings where porn shops used to operate:

I learned to pray about things like porn shops as a kid with my family. Every Sunday we drove by this huge night club on our way to and from church. The nightclub had billboard signs implying topless dancing and other debauchery inside. I'm not sure how long my family prayed for this nightclub to close down, but one Sunday, we drove by and the billboard had been replaced with a For Sale sign. We all cheered.

Over the years my family and I asked God to shut down a lot of places we believed were strongholds of sin, and He always did. Since my childhood days of prayer-warrior training with my family, I have carried on the tradition. My parents instilled in me a very literal belief that prayer changes the world, and God continues to prove this belief to be sound.

So the title of this blog post is "How I Shut Down Two Porn Shops," but that only tells part of the story. The rest of the story is that God shut those places down. It's like what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:10, "I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me." I faithfully prayed that God would change part of my city, and by His grace, He heard my prayers and responded. But, really, even the fact that I was able to pray with Him is a gift of His grace.

As Christians, we can look at our cities with the perspective of children of God. We are God's kids, and when our hearts are aligned with His, we can pray His will and partner with Him in advancing His kingdom and bringing grace, healing and redemption to our cities.

As stoked as I get when one of the places I pray about closes down, let me be clear that my prayers are not vindictive or self-righteous. We need to be grounded in the Father's heart of love and compassion as well as His heart for justice. I don't pray for porn shops and strip clubs to close down because I want a power trip. I pray because these kinds of places are strongholds of addiction, spiritual oppression, and the dehumanization of both men and women.

When I pray in this way, I pray for a blessing on the next people who will occupy the buildings I target. I pray that God would break the spiritual strongholds and curses within those spaces. And I pray that He would bring healing, freedom and repentance to the previous owners of the place.

Begin asking God for spiritual eyes with which to see your city. Ask Him to show you the places of darkness that He wants you to pray over. And don't just pray for the porn shops to close down. Pray for churches to thrive. Pray over governmental buildings, schools — over every building you walk inside. Ask God to reveal His heart for your city because He wants to use you where you are. Your faith will grow as you experience the joy of partnering with your Father.

P.S. It took six years to see the porn shops near my house close. Don't give up.

  • -- My pastor likes to tell the story of how 20 years ago in the town our church is located in, Planned Parenthood was thriving and the local hospital did not have maternity services.  Basically, no children were born alive within the city.   Our church, for better or worse, is not the type to picket, but they did pray.  The Planned Parenthood closed due to the fact that it was no longer economically feasible to operate, and the hospital opened a birth center that has won acclaim.

  • -- That's awesome, Kellie! Thanks for sharing!

  • -- I once lived about half a mile from a strip club, but I was only a child and had no idea what it was. It was quite an eyesore, but the building was eventually torn down. Now that I know what I know about strip clubs and porn shops, if one of such establishments were to pop up in my neighborhood, I would probably do whatever it takes to discourage others from going anywhere near there.

  • -- While you are at it, have a little compassion and pray for the strippers and porn stars to be able to find a different job, especially the ones with children to feed. The majority of people do not become sex workers because they enjoy it, but because they do not think they deserve any better and/or they do not see a better option.

  • --Now if we can only find a way to do the same to all of those websites worldwide!  They go right in to the home and mobile phones.

  • --Alyson, you know a good way to keep a girl from turning into a stripper or porn star or one of the myriad of strong, powerful, empowered, independent women looking for acceptance from every guy with whom she sleeps? Stop ejecting fathers from children's lives.  But there's money to be made destroying lives. And the government loves the power they have over broken people. Perhaps we should pray for an end to divorce and a releasing of the hold that cultural marxism/feminism has over every aspect of America and western civilization.

  • --Yeah, I"m pretty sure the Internet was what shut down the porn shops.

  • --Anthony,

I don't think your title choice is a good reflection of your post... having read it, I might've titled it "How God is moving in my community", or something to that effect.  Just to be up front and honest, I find myself very turned off by the current title and what it implies.  I think it's good to be aware and caring about the town you live in....certainly to be praying for it, supporting local businesses you like, etc.  But I would urge believers to take less of a focus on establishments, laws, etc and more of a focus on people - and their practical and spiritual needs.

I hope along with you that the now vacant lots will be transformed into a positive establishment for the community.  But as others have said... porn stores, strip clubs, etc may be closing...but they've found a way into people's homes, which can be just as destructive.  I admire your prayer warrior mentality... I would just steer it more towards people themselves.

  • --Very good job (BTW I am one of those horrid, evil, vile, disgusting non-Christians)

  • --"Very good job (BTW I am one of those horrid, evil, vile, disgusting non-Christians)"

I don't see anyone else here using those adjectives (except maybe Greg, and I don't think anyone takes him seriously.)

  • --Greg, sometimes fathers eject themselves and aren't ejected.

  • --LizzieBeth60, in America, the hellhiole, you have fathers being ejected on purpose far, far more often than they eject themselves. Check out the Great Society for example. By design, the federal government destroyed the black family by driving off fathers from their children. They then turned their "great intentions" to the white population. It continues unabated to this day. It is getting worse. LBJ was a horrid, evil, vile, disgusting racist and they knew what they were doing.

  • --Some fathers and mothers should have been ejected because they were abusive. It is true that most families are not split up because of abuse, but it happens. Not all parents are trustworthy.

  • --I think the problem is that we don't actually feel that  God answers our prayers.  It's like the story in Acts 12 where people pray for Peter's release and then when he shows up at the door they refuse to believe the servant who recognized him.

I was thinking how prayer is a bit like people protesting.  My local hospital, where my wife is expected to give birth in a few weeks, was almost shut down by the provincial government around a decade ago.  Widespread protesting saved  it.  Protesting doesn't always work but sometimes it does change the hearts of some leaders.

God is similar.  Not everything you pray for will get a response.  But if a person prays persistently and really believe that God can change things He will at times change them.
